VMware and Mitel Provide Virtualized Desktops

29 Aug 2011

At VMworld 2011, Mitel and VMware revealed their integration of Mitel's virtualized Unified Communicator Advanced client software with VMware View 5, which allows the companies to deliver soft phone and mobile device integration into a desktop virtualization environment.

With this collaboration, desktop virtualization has been extended to enable voice solutions and UC applications to be deployed as a single solution, reducing costs while extending desktop and mobile environments to anywhere with an internet connection. Users can access collaboration tools such as voice, video, presence, instant messaging, audio and web conferencing, and e-mail from the VMware View client, as desktops and applications are moved into the cloud and delivered as a managed service. End users are provided with a consistent and high-performance desktop experience whether they're in or out of the office, even from a mobile device.

According to Blair Pleasant, co-founder of UCStrategies, "With this technology, users can sign on to their desktop, get all of their telephony capabilities from any workstation that's connected to the data center - whether in a conference room or an airport - and always have the same desktop experience in a secure way."

She adds, "There are some incredible use cases for this type of virtual environment, such as contact centers and hospitals. Contact center agents can work from any desk or workstation, making it easier to work from home as remote agents, while still having access to all the data in a secure manner. For hospitals, doctors and nurses can move from room to room and can have their experience follow them no matter what device they're on. Companies that use temporary workers, contractors, and consultant can get a lot of value from this."

A demo of this joint solution is available at VMware's booth #621, and Mitel's booth #560 at VMworld 2011. For more information, visit www.vmworld.com or www.mitel.com.
